Who knew that doggies, especially doggies as pretty and well-groomed as I, would get the sniffles, itches, and sneezes?!? Here's some great info about doggie allergies for your human to read so that you don't get a bad case of the blahs.

Here's a list of the Top 10 Reasons Why Doggies Get Itchy - my human found it here.
Itching is one of the most unpleasant sensations imaginable - and a dog's never-ending scratching, biting, and licking can seem nearly as aggravating. If your pet is constantly shaking their head, or scratching, rubbing, chewing or licking some area of skin, you can bet that there's likely some agonizing itching going on. Left untreated, areas of itchy skin become vulnerable to damage from your pet's scratching or licking, to hot spots (areas of oozing, dry or inflamed skin), and even to secondary infections from bacteria. What may be causing the itch, and what can you do about it? Here's a list of the top ten itch-causing factors. Are any of these going on at your house?

1. Poor Quality Diet - We're not talking about food allergies here (more on that shortly). A surprising factor underlying a vast number of allergic itch reactions is simply a poor quality diet that inadequately nourishes your dog. A good diet is the foundation of good health. Even the best medication won't eliminate allergic skin reactions when your pet's immune system is unable to function properly due to lack of nutrients. A good daily multivitamin is a great way to enhance the nutrient levels your pet gets each day as well.

2. Airborne Allergens - Most cases of itchy skin are caused by the same things that cause human allergies (dust, grasses, pollen, etc.). While humans sneeze and have other respiratory symptoms, pets usually develop atopic dermatitis, showing their allergic reaction through their skin. While this is a major cause of pets' itching, airborne allergies are tough to diagnose, and other causes usually need to be ruled out first. Remember that just like humans, pets can be allergic to both natural allergens like pollen and chemical irritants like pesticide residue and household cleaning products.

3. Food Allergies - While making up only about 10% of diagnosed allergies, food allergies are considered by many holistic vets to be the primary cause of about 30% of allergy cases in pets. This is due to how allergies activate your pet's immune system. Pets sensitive to one food allergen (commonly grain-based proteins called glutens) can become hyper-reactive to other allergens like dust or pollen. Fortunately, food allergies can be resolved with diligent detective work, eliminating all common allergens from the diet (beef, chicken, eggs, corn, wheat, soy, and milk), then reintroducing one at a time to see which ones cause an allergic reaction.

4. Contact Dermatitis - Some cases of itchy skin in pets is caused by direct skin contact with irritating substances. Common causes of contact dermatitis include flea collars and topical flea and tick preparations, grooming products, and household cleaners that pets contact through their skin - especially through the pads of their feet. As with food allergies, removing suspect products from any contact with your pet's skin can help determine what's causing the itch.

5. Fleas, Mites and Insect Bites - The most common allergy that causes itchy skin in pets (usually around the base of the tail and hindquarters) is flea bite dermatitis, an allergic reaction to flea saliva that can be triggered by only one flea bite! This can be frustrating for pet parents because a single flea bite can cause a severe reaction, yet you may never see a full blown flea infestation. If you live in an area where fleas are present, always keep in mind that one flea can cause some furious itching in your pet. Your vet can help you determine what degree of flea protection you need to keep your pet safe and healthy, but remember that natural solutions for insect control are the safest way to go and are well worth a try if you live in an area known for flea problems.

6. Skin Infections - Three main types of skin infections can cause itching in pets. Bacterial infection is often a secondary problem created by a cat or dog scratching, licking or biting an already irritated area of skin. These skin infections can be painful as well as increasing the itch factor. Ringworm, a fungal infection, is not uncommon - and it's contagious to humans! Ringworm commonly appears as areas of broken or crusty skin, with hair loss, usually around the head, face, or extremities. A vet can test your pet if ringworm is suspected. Another fungus problem is due to a yeast infection on the skin. This chronic itch problem commonly occurs on the paws or in the ears, and is often accompanied by yeast overgrowth in the digestive tract.

7. Genetic Factors & Breed Predisposition - Unfortunately, some breeds of cats and dogs are more prone to sensitive skin, or are more likely to develop allergic itching due to skin folds and ear shapes. Many breeds of dogs including Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Shih Tzus, and many Terrier breeds are more prone to allergies that cause itching skin. Dogs with skin folds and floppy ears are more likely to develop itching from yeast or bacterial infections due to the ideal environment their anatomical features offer to these opportunistic microbes. Another related factor is temperament, with sensitive, high-strung breeds being more prone to reactive health conditions like allergies. The mind-body connection operates in pets as well as humans!

8. Vaccine Reactions - Although still controversial and not uniformly acknowledged by all pet health professionals, incidences of over-vaccination, and even single dose vaccine reactions are becoming more recognized and well-documented in pets. Vaccines are designed to cause a reaction in the immune system, and for some pets, the protein base of the vaccine serum can cause pets to develop allergies. In other cases, multiple vaccines administered together can overwhelm the immune system, resulting in "vaccinosis," a condition commonly known to trigger allergic symptoms like itchy skin.

9. Glandular/Hormonal Imbalances - Several glandular imbalances can cause skin problems that contribute to itching in some pets. Two of the most common are related to thyroid and adrenal gland functioning. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) is more common in dogs than in cats, but cases are found in both species. Hypothyroidism can cause the skin to become greasy, foul smelling, and in some cases very itchy. Cushing's Disease (more correctly called Hyperadrenocorticism) is caused by adrenal gland overactivity, and commonly occurs in older dogs, where numerous skin problems that can cause itching may occur. These are serious health issues that require vet treatment, so always check with your vet when unusual skin issues or other symptoms arise.

10. Detoxification Effects - The skin is an important organ of elimination, and one of the ways that pets may remove toxic residues from their systems is through their skin. If your pet has a temporary bout of itching, it may be a simple healing process as the body rids itself of residues its been storing up. This is a very common phenomenon when pets change from pharmaceutical to holistic remedies, or when their food is upgraded. Typically, a period of itchy skin, change in stool odor, consistency and volume, and/or runny nose can occur as part of a healing crisis when pets are going through a natural and healthy detoxification process. These periods generally don't last long, and should resolved within 1-4 weeks, depending on the state of health your companion.

It's Getting Warm Soon, Right?

This up and down weather is enough to confuse a pup! I've been so busy with my doggie-spa appointments, picking out my Spring wardrobe, and taste testing new treats that I haven't had time to blog. Whew! I really use a trip to the island of Malta - I've always loved it there, amongst all the other Maltese!

Saturday was a real whirlwind for me as I went to meet some of my BFF's at the Lil' Paws Adoption Day. Here's a pic of my adoring fans, clamoring for my paw-tograph. We, at Lil Paws Maltese Rescue, believe the best dog for the job, is a Maltese. Here are a few reasons why:

We are so very regal and elegant in our demeanor. Perfect for a public figure.

Our long elegant and silky hair lacks an undercoat, and is pure bright white in color. Weʼre non-allergenic (great for Obamaʼs girls) and donʼt shed.

We are gentle, good natured and amiable (unlike the White House press corps).

We love to be social and know just how to behave. No worries about embarrassing international incidents.

We know how to ROCK LIKE BARACK! Check out this video from a couple of our buddies Lulu and Lolly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCsxIiksAnU

To learn more about fostering or adopting a Maltese or other small dog, contact Lil Paws Maltese Rescue at lilpaws_malteserescue@yahoo.com

Phone:512-945-0200

Greetings from Greece...

Kalispera!

That is the "good morning" greeting from Greece, where I now live in my new forever home! You see my new parents are missionaries in this strange country! My name is "Boaz" alias Albert, alias Thor! I am a chubby little maltese who has been on a whirlwind life change since my new parents visited me at my foster home in Austin in Feb of this year. They didn't take me home immediately (though I sure wanted to go w/them), but my new dad came back to collect me later and flew with me to Greece, where I now live. It has been a very exciting life change for a little guy like me.
The really amazing thing is that I am the center of the universe here! My new parents are absolutely crazy about me and I am a people magnet wherever we show up. They take me everywhere! Believe me there is always something new to explore in Greece!
My new family has had maltese for almost 37 years---my mom is even a registered breeder in Austria where she used to live! It didn't take her long to realize something about me that was my little secret----I am almost totally deaf and have probably been that way since birth! That is why I really didn't bark in foster care! My new family says that I am the perfect dog for them since I am deaf---- I pay no attention to all the barking dogs in this chaotic city when we are out walking! God knew exactly what we both needed! My new family is working with touch while they teach me hand signals. I pretend that I don't understand them when I want to go after the cat----which THEY call "my sister". YUK.
I want to thank all of the people who made it possible for me to begin this new life-adventure---those that gave me up, those that took me in and cared for me while I was homeless---especially Sandy--my foster mom, and for those who helped me find my new family. I pray that all of the little dogs in foster care will some day be as happy as I am!
Oh yea, if you are in my neighborhood drop by for a little visit! I will take you for a walk by the sea!

slurpy slurppy kisses,
Boaz (doll baby)

Qui me amat, amet et canem meum. (Who loves me will love my dog also.)

- St. Bernard

Charity needs your help!!

Charity is a 5 lb., 11-year-old Maltese that was dropped in the night box at the local shelter with a note from her previous owners requesting euthanasia. Lil’ Paws intervened and took her into our organization where her first stop before going to her new foster home was to Animal Trustees of Austin. After her assessment by Dr. K. Lewis, she was prepped and in emergency surgery within 30 minutes. Charity was diagnosed with Pyometra, which is a serious uterine infection that is potentially fatal and can occur in unspayed animals.

Not only was Charity diagnosed with Pymotera but also a heart murmur (grade 5). She is now taking medication for this condition as well.

Charity would not walk when her foster mom first took her home after surgery but now…she is walking around and feeling much better! Charity is a very sweet little girl that still has a lot of life left in her. It’s hard not to fall in love with these very special little dogs, and they stay in our hearts long after they have left our homes. Sometimes, it is just too much to think about saying goodbye, and a foster parent will decide to keep their foster dog. And that is just what happened to Lambie. This is what his foster mom had to say about him, after she decided he wasn't going anywhere:

So there it is :) He is our little man, the man of the house with a bunch of females. How will he stand it? LOL! Lambie just doesn't fit him anymore. He's not the dog I first took in. He is a vibrant, energetic, bossy, loving, wonderful, caring, funny, assertive, protective and family oriented little man. We are good for him, but he is also very good for us. When he came back from the overnight visit, even Dharma was delighted. Now the three of them play. TOO CUTE for words. In the evenings, instead of just lounging, Halo and the pack run and romp like crazy. She looks up at me panting like crazy, with a goofy grin on her face. Makes my heart squeeze. He still sometimes gets a little serious and will get very close to me and peer into my eyes. Usually when I'm on the couch and he has perched on top of the couch. I think he is saying don't even THINK of sending me anywhere else… I pick YOU!
The Wolf pack,
Phyllis, Halo, Dharma and Teddy

Raleigh now Rowdie

Raleigh came into our group in March of this year. He spent the first two years of his life living a miserable existence in a puppy mill. As if that weren't bad enough, he survived a terrible housefire while in foster care. Thanks to the quick actions of a kind and brave fireman, he was rescued for the second time in his life. The fireman heard Raleigh barking, saw him emerge from the smoke, grabbed him up, and tossed him to another fireman at the bottom of the stairs, where he was taken to the safety of a neighbor's house. His white fur was totally gray from the smoke and singed in places, but he recovered. Not long after that, Raleigh was adopted into a wonderful new home. His name is Rowdie now, and he is one happy and loved little dog!

Here's a letter we recently received from Rowdie:

My owner, Jan, has been very negligent. When she adopted me I distinctly heard her promise to send you a picture of me for Happy Tails, and I know that she never lived up to that promise. However, today I took over the computer and here is a picture of me in my stylishly short, summer haircut.

I love living in Houston! At first I was very shy and didn’t know how to act because everything was so new, but one thing I found that I liked right away was going for a walk, even though I did not know how to walk properly and, at first, didn’t act at all like a dog. The sky was too big, and I was too busy looking around to pay attention to all the doggie cafes and bars along the way, but now that I’ve matured I visit each and every watering spot on my daily walks.

A few days after I moved into Jan’s house she took me out in the yard and I think that I finally realized that I was no longer going to be confined to a dog carrier 24 hours a day. Once that thought set in I took off running in these huge circles around Jan, talking all the while, telling her how wonderful it felt to have the freedom to run. I still do that at least once a day because I know it makes her happy. It makes me happy, too.

I am pretty well potty trained (except when I get mad at Jan for going off and leaving me). I’m healthy, eat like a little glutton, get groomed monthly and have tons, and tons of toys (but Jan’s socks are still my favorites). I also have a cat. At first I didn’t know what this strange thing was so I stayed away from it, in case it was dangerous, but now I know it’s just Ariel, another member of the household, and we get along fine. Sometimes we even touch noses but I never chase her, which seems to make her (and Jan) happy.

We are sorry that we did not get up to the reunion. Maybe we’ll be able to make it next year. And I am really happy to see that all of my brothers and sisters from Oklahoma have been adopted. I think about them often.

Both Jan and I want to thank you, and all your friends and volunteers, for everything that you’ve done to give me a new life. I am so happy to be living with Jan and Jan tells me all the time how much joy I bring into her life.

Isn’t life grand?

Love,
Rowdie/Raleigh

LPMR First Annual Reunion

Our first reunion was a big success! Our vet estimates that he is around 1 1/2 to 2 years old and the amount of long hair he had on his face shows he was never groomed in that amount of time.

To realize that in the month he's been with us and the two or three weeks he spent being fostered was the first time he'd ever walked on a leash or been taught any of these things makes me realize just what a special little dog he is.

In just one month he is more confident and relaxed around people of all ages. He is calm and affectionate with children. He rarely barks. He loves to go for walks and is doing so well with his potty habits. He has been on a couple of road trips and had a great time. He sure loves his food! He is still thin and he doesn't really play much, but I believe he will do everything in time.

We're so happy to have Coco in our family!
The Cannons
To see more of Coconut, check out his MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/coconutcannon

My Wonderful New Life After Being In A Puppymill...

"Before"
"Now"
Tucker formerly known as Cupid is a Puppymill Survivor! This is a message from his family the Surles.

When Tucker first came to us he seemed scared and lost. Even though he is 7 years old, he was just like a puppy experiencing things for the first time. Grass was new; being petted was new, going for walks on a leash was new. We spent the first couple of weeks approaching him cautiously. Actually going through a little catch me dance to get the leash on and go outside to the bathroom. But what a quick learner!! He now gives signals to me when he wants to go out, and he will walk alongside me without being on a leash. We have a pet door that he goes in and out at will, but for some reason he wants to be escorted outside to take care of business. I guess he knows he's assured of getting a treat that way!

Every day I see a new positive behavior. This morning he actually played with me running through the house chasing me, then letting me chase him. Teaching him how to play has probably been the hardest thing for us it involves such trust on his part. He is so relaxed now when I hold him in my lap while I read or watch TV. He is such a good companion for me, and I can't imagine life without Tucker! We feel so blessed to have him in our lives.

The Surles

Dodger aka Kringle Update!

Before

Now

Dodger aka Kringle came to Lil’ Paws Maltese Rescue from Town Lake Animal Shelter on 12/19/06. Dodger was turned in for causing a child to have an allergic reaction to him. Unknown to his previous owners, Dodger had Sarcoptic mange and Demodex mange. Both types of mange are very treatable.

Sarcoptic mange is contagious not only to other animals but also humans. Even though Sarcopitic mange is easily treated, it can be very painful. Dodger came to us with a great personality and not allowing his illness to get him down.

Dodger found a wonderful family that adopted him and loves him unconditionally. I wanted to share an update from Dodger’s family!

It's a very different story now for "the Dodge-man", "Doderini",
"Fluffer-nutter". Not only does Dodger have many different names of
endearment, he invites a love-fest on most occasions. He's been to a
ranch in south Texas, with my book club, where everyone fought over the chance to love on him! He's gone to the wedding of his big "brother" in St. Louis where we regretted he was not in the wedding party because he is so handsome. One of the first words spoken by his 15-month old "cousin" was "Dodgey". His next adventure is a trip to the mountains of New Mexico where he will be able to run free in the great outdoors. When he has the opportunity to run free in safe environments, he is so happy to be "all dog". He will often come to rest at a high point and put himself to work as our watchdog.
Dodger has a very long walk every morning with me and a friend. He follows perfectly on his leash. After his walk he plays with his cat-sister, Scout. They get along great and have invented many different games. He still loves toys and taking toys out of his toy basket. He loves to play fetch and has learned to let go of the ball rather than try to play "tug-of-war"--a bad habit he may have learned from his 9 foster sibling dogs! He loves to chew on rawhide bones. He is playful and mischievous, but also listens when you tell him "no". Most recently at “grandma's" house he had everyone in stitches when he dragged a stuffed teddy bear, larger than him, from the top of grandma's big bed all the way into the living room. Somehow he figured out how to drag the teddy bear to the edge of the bed, nose it to the floor, jump after it, and drag it in to show us! After two times, we had to stop these antics and he was very obedient. Dodger has a walk with his Dad every evening before supper. He loves to hang around the kitchen when we cook and knows that when the refrigerator door opens, he might be asked to perform a trick in exchange for a small bite of cheese. He knows: "go to your spot", "sit", "down", and “stay". Dodger now weighs over 14 pounds. He has a shiny, soft white coat and he is in perfect health. After a full day, he loves to cuddle with one of us in the lazy boy. He knows when it's time for bed and hops into bed with us, politely taking up only a little bit of space and resting quietly until we say its morning and time to get up. In short, we refer to him as the cutest, smartest, best dog in the world. In order to share Dodger's gifts with many others, my plan is to get some professional training with him so that he can be certified to be a Therapy dog. I hope to start that in October.

In Memory of Ginger

Today (7/24/07) our long term foster, Ginger aka Gin Gin crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Ginger came into Lil’ Paws in November 2006. She was found by a good samaritan on the east side of Austin. Ginger had obviously had several litters of puppies in her days out on the streets. She also was extremely malnourished and had a horrible skin condition which caused her to itch and to have tough black skin. Ginger’s mouth was full of leaves, twigs, and cigarette butts (obviously what she had to eat).
After coming into her new foster home that late night, Ginger was very scared and shy. Her foster mom took her to the vet to be spayed and given vaccinations. She was tested for heartworms (was surprisingly negative), had a dental, and her skin was treated. At first, Ginger kept her distance from everyone, but after about a week, she started to become attached to her foster Dad, Perry. She would follow him everywhere and look at him adoringly! In the coming months, she began to bond with the other members of her foster family. Ginger's foster parents worked with her continuously for the 8 months that she lived with them, helping her learn about trust and how to be part of a family. They loved her dearly, regardless of the behaviors she showed.
Now Ginger will no longer have to suffer or remember the bad life she had before coming to Lil’ Paws. Her foster parents will never forget the little ‘paw waves” she would do for them when she wanted something. We love and miss you, Gin Gin.

Happy Tales

Lil Paws Maltese Rescue has been busy busy busy these last few months rescuing and finding homes for abandoned pets. This is Tease writing to let you know we appreciate the secret connections you make with us, your canine friends. We need your attention. You may think your lives are busy, but I'm going to give you the inside scoop on my existence -- I have it rough too.

Such a burden being Maltese and having all that envy pointed straight at me! Honestly, it is not my fault that long, flowing pure white hair is the bomb. All the love and affection of my owner is so deserved, and returned in abundance. I am generous with my licks.

I couldn't be happier that spring is just around the corner! My Gucci bomber jacket has kept me warm through this horrible winter, and now it is time to pack it up and get my toes painted for the beach... We Maltese go everywhere with our friends. They say we are excellent companion dogs, and it is true, especially when we are treated to only the very best accommodations. Have you seen my buddies on Liz’s arm? Designer carriers with the softest liners for us -- it is the Maltese way.

Quiet and sophisticated, that's us. As a breed, we Maltese are generally happy, rarely barking except over a little separation anxiety once in a while. We are very loyal and tend to bond strongly with our humans. And who can blame us for that! A girl needs her peeps.

Look into my deep black eyes and tell me you can't live without me. I'll know it's true. Who could resist nuzzling my soft black nose and stroking my long silky coat? Don't fight it. Give in to Maltese Love. I know there is not a lot of me -- only 6 lbs, but that just concentrates the fun! As we go jaunting down the avenue together, everyone will turn and smile. That is why Maltese are such great dogs to be with -- we create smiles and joy in humans, and you can all use more of that.
